welcome!

I am so excited to be a part of welcoming your new family member into the world !

This guide is designed to help you be prepared and confident for your newborn session. A part of getting great images and candid shots is making sure you are comfortable by setting your expectations right from the beginning. As you read through my suggestions and thoughts, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have!

hey there!

timeline

HOW LONG WILL MY NEWBORN SESSION TAKE?

I typically spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours in your home. This includes both individual portraits of your newborns as well as lifestyle shots with mom, dad and any siblings.

WHAT DOES THE TYPICAL SESSION TIMELINE LOOK LIKE?

When I arrive, I have you walk me around your home so I can pick out what are going to be the best locations for your photo shoot. (Questions about what locations I typically choose? Scroll down to the Location section below). After I have identified good locations, I typically start with spending time with mom and dad both individually and together, documenting your candid interactions with your newborn. If you have other siblings as well, please let me know ahead of time so I can plan time and ideas to incorporate them into the session. After these family photos, I will move towards individual portraits of your newborn. I will place them in their crib on a bed and set up next to a sunny window and capture all the little details that you love so much about your baby.

individual portraits

Individual portraits of your newborn are an opportunity to capture all the tiny features of your baby that you have fallen in love with - from their tiny toes to their nose that looks just like dad's, I want to document their uniqueness for you to look back on in years to come.

DO YOU BRING PROPS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL PORTRAITS?

My style is more natural and raw by capturing the beauty of your baby exactly as they are - this means, I put them in natural poses and positions - I don't force them into poses that are unnatural to them. I typically use areas of your home to do these - their nursery, crib, your bed, etc. On occasion, I do have clients that provide headbands or a special outfit for the individual portraits, and I am more than happy to accommodate that, but please let me know ahead of time if you do plan on having additional props.

WHY DO YOU DO THE SESSION IN MY HOME?

It all depends. On of my top priorities is providing you with high-quality, professional images reflective of my style that you expect. One of the biggest factors in doing that is lighting. So, when I walk into your home, I will have you show me around to the brightest, sunniest areas of your house with the most windows. Typically, I find the best locations in a home are the living room, nursery and master bedroom.

So we don’t waste precious session time moving objects around, please spend a few moments before I arrive to make sure that the rooms I will be photographing in are tidied up. A part of a good image is not having a cluttered background and while I do my absolute best to frame pictures with a pleasant background, removing items off your nightstand or side table helps to make your images look that much cleaner.

WHERE IN MY HOME WILL YOU CAPTURE IMAGES?

preparing your newborn

Making sure your baby is happy and comfortable is so crucial to your session. If your baby is happy, you are happy and it makes for some really amazing pictures. Please follow the below recommendations for prepping your newborn the day of your session.

PREPPING YOUR NEWBORN

Feeding – Please feed your baby right before I arrive. A well-fed baby is a happy baby. I also suggest keeping a bottle nearby during the session (if you are pumping or using formula), this sometimes help them to fall asleep and be comfortable while taking individual portraits. If you are not pumping or using formula, please know that if your baby is getting cranky, I may suggest feeding them again and then resuming the session.

Keep Them Awake - Keep your newborn awake for 1-2 hours prior to my arrival - we want them to be as sleepy as possible!

WHAT IF MY BABY WON'T COOPERATE DURING THEIR SESSION?

You as parents and I as the photographer have no control over how much your baby will cooperate during the session. If your baby is unhappy, I will most likely ask you to feed them again (don’t worry if it takes some time, my priority is getting images you love). Almost 95% of the time, feeding your newborn helps take the fuss out of them and we can resume your session. Some other options will be wrapping them in a blanket (which I love the look of in images anyways) or playing some white noise (I have a white noise app on my cell phone!). Whatever we have to do, take a deep breath and go with the flow. I’ll be as flexible as I need to to get great images!

what to wear

NEWBORN CLOTHING SUGGESTIONS

Individual Portraits – I most often have your baby in just their diaper for the individual portraits. I have blankets that I will wrap them in and having only a diaper on makes it easy and simple. If you have a prop or specific outfit in mind for these images please let me know ahead of time so I can make suggestions – something such as a tutu will be totally fine, while a onesie with words on it might not work well for these types of images.

Lifestyle – I always suggest simple, solid color outfits for newborns. I absolutely LOVE pattern, but know that on tiny humans, patterns tend to swallow them up and distract from the final picture. Most of the time a comfortable, solid colored onesie works great! Please also have a few swaddle blankets on hand to choose from - my heart can’t help but melt when I see you holding your baby all snuggled up in a blanket.

MOM + DAD'S CLOTHING

When it comes to choosing clothing for your session, I always want you to be comfortable and confident in whatever you are wearing. I suggest that you tailor your color selection to your skin tone, eyes and hair color. Choose colors that you like and, if you are planning on hanging up these images in your home, select colors that match well with your home décor. Since your session is indoors, where light is already more limited than outside, I do suggest wearing lighter colors. Sometimes when you are wearing very dark clothing and we are shooting indoors, it can make the images feel much darker and moodier. Lastly, I mentioned that I LOVE pattern – and I do! But, if your husband is wearing a patterned shirt, I would always suggest that you wear something solid to balance it out – pattern is great, but too much pattern tends to clash in an image.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY IMAGES?

Going through the hundreds of images I capture during your session and picking out the most amazing ones that I know you are going to love takes time. I then hand-edit each of your images individually to ensure that every picture is print ready. While I always aim to deliver your final images as soon as possible, you will receive them no later than three weeks after your session.

HOW DO YOU DELIVER MY IMAGES?

I deliver your images via an online, private gallery. When your images are ready, I will send you an email that contains a link to your image gallery, a password to access your gallery and a download pin for you to download and save your high resolution images to your computer or a USB drive. Please keep in mind that your gallery will only be live for two weeks, so make sure you download ALL your images and save them in a safe spot before then.

CAN I PRINT MY IMAGES MYSELF?

Yes, I provide you with the print release for all your images so you can print them as you wish. However, since you spent hundreds of dollars on your session, you invested time into deciding on outfits and poured out your love for your little one on the day of your session, I would hate to see your investment go to waste by ordering low quality prints through places such as Walgreens, Target, Walmart, Costco or Shutterfly. You are probably asking "why, Larissa?" And that is a great question! In this article, I physically show you the difference in print quality and how, for usually only a few cents more, you can easily order high quality, professional prints from www.mpix.com that are delivered directly to your door. Do you need help ordering prints? Please reach out to me with any questions or assistance!

CAN I SHARE MY IMAGES ON INSTAGRAM OR FACEBOOK?

Please, please, please share your images with your friends and family! You can absolutely share your images on Facebook or Instagram, but be sure to give image credit to We, The Light Photography. You can do this by tagging @wethelightphotography on Facebook or @larissawelchphoto on Instagram. If you are on the more illiterate side of using social media (trust me, I was this way for forever!), then you can simply include my website (www.wethelightphotography.com) in your image/post description.

Do you follow me? I love to continually share my favorite images from your session and show off your adorable newborn on my social media platforms. Be sure to follow along so you don't miss a thing:

DO YOU GIVE ME ALL OF THE PHOTOS?

Yes! I do not limit the number of photos that I deliver to you. Some photographers will only deliver a specific number of images in hopes that you will purchase additional images from them. My philosophy is that if I took an awesome picture, I am going to deliver that picture to you!

WHO OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE PHOTOS?

As the creator of the images, the photographer owns the rights to the photos, but this does not mean that you can't print your digital images or post them on social media! It only means that you cannot sell the photos for profit or use them for commercial purposes without permission. I am, however, not responsible for lost images after I have delivered them to you, so I highly suggest backing up your images in at least TWO different locations (ie. your computer and a USB drive).

beyond your session

Beyond being thrilled and absolutely thankful to be invited into your home to document the first moments with your new addition, I always strive to stay in contact with you and continue to provide exceptional service beyond your session!

THRILLED WITH YOUR SESSION?

It is my aim to make you 100% satisfied with your experience with We, The Light Photography! Is there anything else I could help you with? I invite you to share with me how I could improve my services for my future clients, or learn about what your favorite thing about working with me was! If you feel comfortable, would you be willing to take five minutes to share your experience of working with We, The Light Photography?
