When’s The Best Time To Schedule Your Newborn Session?
Posted On | February 21, 2017
As a photographer of many things, I have to admit that teeny, tiny hands and toes are my absolute favorite to capture! And, capturing that tiny human along with the momma and dad that brought them into my world makes my heart melt – every. single. time.
Beyond planning for your in-home, lifestyle newborn session and making sure you and your little one are prepared (ie. fed right before I come over) the timing of your session makes a big difference. I recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first week or two of birth for so many reasons.
One of my biggest reasons to schedule your newborn session within the first two weeks is because your littlest family member is still so new to you. You are still learning about their habits. You are still studying their tiny hands and color of their eyes. You are still so captivated with this little human that you brought into this world. And because you are still making this connection and learning about your baby, it allows me to capture so much more intimacy, love and connection.
During the first few weeks after birth, your newborn wants to sleep – and sleeps a lot! And that is the other major reason I always recommend having your newborn session in the first two weeks. When your newborn wants to sleep, it allows me to capture the sweet portrait shots of them sleeping in a basket or wrapped up in a blanket. This is also why I do all my newborn sessions in the comfort of your home. By the time I arrive in the first couple weeks, your baby is used to sleeping in your house, is comfortable with their surroundings and does not have the uncertainty that can lead to not sleeping when going to a new place.
So, you may be thinking, because babies are unpredictable in when they decide to come into this world, how do I schedule my newborn session with you? I only book a limited number of newborn sessions within a certain time-frame so that I am able to be 100% committed to scheduling a time that works with you after your baby is born. If you reach out to me for the first time after your baby is already born, there is a chance that I will not be able to accept your session or only have less-desirable session times available because of my commitment to the parents who I have already booked in that time-frame. Because of this, I always recommend reaching out to me at least a month or two prior to your due date, so I can get you scheduled within a time period around your due date. This way, I know I can absolutely guarantee a flexible session time with you once your baby arrives.
