Most Googled Elopement Locations Mini Series: Garden of the Gods

Is Garden of the Gods Actually Worth It for Your Elopement? An Honest Take.

Garden of the Gods shows up everywhere. Pinterest boards, Facebook groups, the first page of Google when you type “Colorado elopement locations.” And honestly, it deserves some of that attention. Those red rock formations are genuinely unlike anything else in the state. But we also think it deserves a more honest conversation than most blog posts are willing to have.

So here it is.

The scenery is specific. Really specific.

Garden of the Gods has a very distinct look. Dramatic red sandstone formations shooting up out of the earth at wild angles, almost like the ground cracked open and the rocks just kept going. It’s striking, unusual, and honestly kind of otherworldly. If that’s the aesthetic you’re dreaming about for your elopement, then yes, Garden of the Gods might genuinely be the right place for you.
But here’s the thing a lot of blog posts gloss over. If you’re picturing a Colorado mountain elopement with pine trees, altitude, crisp air, and that tucked-into-the-peaks feeling, Garden of the Gods is not that. Not even close. It’s a pretty important distinction when you’re planning one of the biggest days of your life around a specific vibe.

What Google Won’t Tell You About Garden of the Gods

It’s not actually in the mountains.

Garden of the Gods is located in Colorado Springs, on the front range. You can see the mountains from there, which is beautiful in its own way, but you are not in the mountains. If you’re dreaming of a mountain elopement with pine trees, altitude, and that tucked-into-the-peaks feeling, this one might catch you off guard.

It is really, really busy.

This is the part we feel like nobody talks about enough. Garden of the Gods is one of the most visited places in the entire state. It’s free to get in, it doesn’t require a permit for elopements, and it draws an enormous number of people year-round. The parking lots and roads have not kept up with the foot traffic. We’ve been there on weekdays and still spent stressful stretches trying to find spots for multiple cars in the same lot. That’s not the energy you want on your elopement morning.

It gets hot. Not The Best Experience.

Because Garden of the Gods sits at a lower elevation on the front range, it doesn’t get that cool mountain relief that draws so many couples to Colorado in the first place. We’re talking 90-plus degree days through a lot of the summer. It can be hot in a way that catches people off guard, especially if they were expecting the breezy alpine feeling they’ve seen in other Colorado elopement photos.
Colorado Springs might not be what you’re imagining.

We say this as locals who genuinely love parts of Colorado Springs. Manitou Springs is nearby and it’s charming. There’s a coffee shop down there we’d drive for. But as a destination overall, Colorado Springs is a city, not a mountain town. It doesn’t have that small, walkable, surrounded-by-peaks feeling that makes places like Estes Park or Ouray feel like somewhere you’d want to linger. We’ve had couples elope in Rocky Mountain National Park and then spend a few days in Colorado Springs, and more than once they’ve told us it felt like a letdown after being so immersed in the mountains. That’s not a knock on the city. It’s just honest context.

Tips for Eloping at Garden of the Gods, If It’s the Location You Choose

If the red rocks are genuinely calling you and nothing else in Colorado is giving you that same pull, we fully support it. Here’s how to make it work.

Plan for a weekday.

Weekends are a different level of crowded, especially from late spring through fall. Even a weekday can feel busier than expected, but it’s almost always a smoother experience.

Go at sunrise.

This is the best tip we can give you. The light is better, the crowds are smaller, the parking is easier, and the whole place feels a little more like it belongs to you for a moment.

Keep your group small.

The more cars you’re coordinating, the more stressful the logistics get. If it can just be the two of you and your photographer, that’s the smoothest version of this day.

Hire a local photographer who actually knows the park.

The main areas, especially that central stretch where most people walk, get packed fast. But there are quieter corners of Garden of the Gods, including spots with arches and stunning compositions, that require maybe a 10 or 15 minute walk and feel like a completely different experience. A photographer who has spent real time there will know exactly where to take you.

Our Honest Bottom Line

Garden of the Gods is beautiful and absolutely worth a visit. But for most couples who are dreaming of a Colorado elopement, it might not be what they’re actually picturing when they imagine getting married here.

If the red rocks are calling you, go. Plan it well, go early, keep it small, and bring someone local who knows where to take you.

If you’re more drawn to mountains, cooler temperatures, quieter mornings, and that feeling of being somewhere the rest of the world hasn’t quite found yet, there are so many places in Colorado that deliver exactly that.
