  • Amplified sound / DJ / live bands (with 10:00 PM noise curfew)
  • Alcohol (in accordance with Colorado’s liquor code)
  • Full catering setups
  • Dogs on leash (not on the baseball field)
  • Decorating the gazebo with wire (no nails or screws)

What’s not allowed:

  • Campfires or bonfires
  • Tent stakes outside marked areas. You’re responsible for broken irrigation lines

When To Get Married At Town Ranch

Best Time of Year To Get Married At Town Ranch

Town Ranch is beautiful across multiple seasons. Here’s what each window actually looks like:

🌡️ Highs in the low-to-mid 70s / Lows in the 40s.

✅ Best for: Peak wildflower season, long daylight hours, the full energy of Crested Butte’s busiest season.

⚠️ Watch for: Afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. At an open-air venue with no permanent cover, a pop-up storm mid-reception is a real scenario. A tent is your best insurance.

💡 Pro tip: This is the most popular booking window and fills fast. Don’t sit on your date.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-50s / Lows in the 30s.

✅ Best for: Golden aspens on the hillsides above town, warm amber light, fewer tourists, easier parking. One of our favorite windows here.

⚠️ Watch for: Snow possible by late September. Pack layers and have a weather plan.

💡 Pro tip: The light in early fall at Town Ranch is something else. If you can swing it, make it happen.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-50s to low 60s / Lows in the 30s.

✅ Best for: Vividly green hills, early wildflowers, snow-capped peaks as a dramatic backdrop. Fewer crowds and a quieter feel.

⚠️ Watch for: Unpredictable weather and some lingering snow on the peaks.

💡 Pro tip: Often gorgeous and underbooked. A great option if you want more space to breathe.

✅ Best for: A very specific, dramatic, winter-in-the-mountains vision. Crested Butte delivers when the snow is down.

⚠️ Watch for: This requires serious planning. Think heated tents, proper infrastructure, and layering guidance for guests.

💡 Pro tip: Know what you’re signing up for and plan accordingly. If winter is the vision, we’re here for it.

Best Time of Day To Get Married at Town Ranch

Late Afternoon / Golden Hour
  • Town Ranch is an open, flat field with sky in every direction. The surrounding peaks catch warm light from the west in the late afternoon and cast it back across the venue. For both ceremony and portraits, this is when the 360-degree views really show up. The 1–2 hours before sunset is the sweet spot.
Morning
  • Soft, clean light and cooler temps. Great if you want a quieter, more intimate feel before the rest of Crested Butte wakes up. Less foot traffic in the adjacent park, and the aspens catch early sun beautifully in fall.

Where to Take Wedding Photos Near Town Ranch

Town Ranch puts you right in the center of Crested Butte with the full mountain range as a backdrop. And the surrounding area is one of the most diverse, photogenic landscapes in all of Colorado. If you’re working with us, we’ll build a custom timeline that layers adventure portraits into your day. Here are the spots we love most nearby:

Snodgrass Mountain

A short drive and moderate hike get you into open wildflower meadows above town. Mid-summer, the hillside looks like someone painted it. In fall, the gold goes on forever. One of the best portrait locations in the entire area.

Gothic Road

Drive north from town and the scenery escalates fast. Dramatic peaks, open meadows, the quiet energy of the Gothic research station. Great for wide landscape moments and intimate walking scenes.

Kebler Pass Road

The aspen groves just west of downtown are some of the best fall foliage in Colorado. Early October, the color there is genuinely unreal.

Emerald Lake

About 40 minutes away. It requires a high clearance, 4×4 vehicle to get to, but the payoff is a vivid teal alpine lake with mountain reflections. A totally different aesthetic from the open ranch setting. Dramatic, remote, and breathtaking.

Planning Tips

Get Your Marriage License
Colorado makes this easy. No waiting period, no residency requirement. Visit any county clerk’s office with your IDs and $30. The Gunnison County Clerk is about 30 minutes south in Gunnison, and appointments are required. Colorado allows self-solemnization, so you don’t even need an officiant if that’s not your thing. Confirm Rental Vendors Before You Book the Venue Tent rental companies in Crested Butte, especially for summer Saturdays, get booked out fast. Confirm vendor availability before you lock in your date. Alpenglow Events Co. is the go-to local option!

Understand the 3-Day Rental Requirement Large tents (anything bigger than a 10’x10′) have to go up the day before and come down the day after. That means a 3-day rental, period. Budget and plan for it upfront.

Plan for Transportation: Town Ranch is walking distance from most accommodations in town, which is genuinely one of its best features. Parking on site is limited, so biking, walking, and carpooling from Elk Avenue are the move for larger groups.

Have a Weather Contingency There’s no permanent structure at Town Ranch. Afternoon storms in July and August are common. A tent is the obvious solution. Jjust make sure it’s in place and properly weighted before the day arrives!

Brief Your Vendors on the Power Situation If you’re running a DJ, string lights, heating, and a coffee station simultaneously, you need the 50 Amp outlet and a spider box. Tell your vendors in advance and make sure someone knows which outlet is which on the day.

Know About the Baseball Field Tommy V Field is right next to the event area and may have games scheduled during your rental. It’s part of the deal with this venue. Brief your guests so no one is surprised.

Check With Caterers Early Town Ranch has no kitchen. Some caterers charge more to service open-field events, and some won’t take them at all. Have this conversation before you’re committed.

Make a Plan for Cake and Perishables No refrigeration on site. Talk to your baker about delivery timing. A buttercream cake in full sun at altitude in July needs a plan!

Take Bears Seriously This is bear country. All food, trash, and bear attractants must be removed the same day. Build cleanup into vendor contracts and the timeline.

  • Assign a day-of coordinator or trusted point person for vendor arrivals and timeline management
  • Make sure someone knows where the 50 Amp outlet is and how the spider box works
  • Have sunscreen available. It’s open, exposed, and at elevation
  • Bring layers for guests as the evening cools (mountain temps can drop 20+ degrees after sunset)
  • Encourage guests to walk from accommodations. Parking is limited and the venue is close to everything
  • Leave a full cleanup window at the end of your rental period. Nothing stays overnight

Not wanting a reception on the event grounds? No problem. Town Ranch is steps from Elk Avenue and some of Crested Butte’s best spots.

Bonez Elk Avenue’s beloved Mexican restaurant. Full buyout available for 44–150 guests. Loud, celebratory, and great food. A five-minute walk from Town Ranch.

Breadery The upstairs Creekside Event Room seats up to 36. Perfect for an intimate post-ceremony dinner. The food is excellent and the space is genuinely special.

Scarp Ridge Lodge Boutique luxury right in the heart of town. Full buyout for up to 18 overnight guests and 50 for a seated dinner. Private, polished, and worth every dollar if that’s the vibe.

Sunflower Farm-to-table multi-course dinners in a beautiful historic building. Great for smaller groups who want an elevated experience.

Secret Stash Crested Butte’s most beloved pizza spot, with a warm and quirky event space. Perfect if your crowd is casual, hungry, and ready for a good time.

Private Chef / Vacation Rental Many couples book a large Airbnb or VRBO in town and hire a private chef. Often the most flexible option for groups of 12–30 and gives you total control over the timeline.

The best part about getting married in Crested Butte is that there’s never a shortage of ways to fill the rest of the trip.

Hiking: Snodgrass Mountain, Judd Falls, Gothic Valley, Lake Irwin, and Emerald Lake all offer something different. There’s genuinely something for every ability level.

Mountain Biking: Crested Butte is widely considered one of the mountain biking capitals of Colorado. If you and your partner ride, this is a non-negotiable addition to the weekend.

Wildflower Festival: Held in mid-July, this is one of the most celebrated events in the Gunnison Valley. If your wedding date overlaps, lean into it.

Kebler Pass Drive: One of the great Colorado fall drives. Time it for early October and you’ll have one of the most spectacular backdrops you’ve ever seen.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding: Lake Irwin is down the road and makes for a mellow afternoon. The Gunnison River is about 30 minutes south for something with more current.

Downtown Crested Butte: Walk Elk Avenue. Get coffee at Camp4Coffee. Grab a beer at the Eldo or the Brick. Eat at Secret Stash. Wander into the boutique shops. The town is genuinely charming and the locals are always friendly!

Stargazing: Low light pollution, high altitude, summer skies that stretch forever. Pack a blanket and make a night of it. Or better yet, end your wedding day with astrophotography, one of our specialties!

Town Ranch is a public park adjacent to protected open space. Crested Butte’s natural surroundings exist the way they do because people have treated them carefully. Your event should leave no trace behind it.

✓ Pack out all trash the same night. No bear attractants left overnight
✓ Don’t dump ice on the grass
✓ No campfires or bonfires
✓ Keep dogs leashed and off the baseball field
✓ Respect the public park. Other families and neighbors share this space
✓ Leave the site in the condition you found it. Your deposit depends on it, and the community depends on it!

Following Leave No Trace principles helps keep this spot beautiful for everyone.
