Snodgrass Trail Elopement Guide – Top Tips for 2026

Posted On | June 14, 2026

Snodgrass Trail is the wildflower elopement location in Crested Butte for couples wanting something easily accessible. Thick aspen groves, open meadows blanketed in color, panoramic views of Mt. Crested Butte, horses grazing in the valley below, and a trail that winds between it all.

The trailhead sits just minutes from downtown, the trail itself is moderate and hikeable in wedding attire with the right footwear, and if your elopement vision involves a sea of wildflowers and a mountain backdrop that looks almost too good to be real, this is the place that keeps showing up in photographers’ galleries for a reason.

Snodgrass Mountain Wedding FAQs

Yes. Snodgrass Trail runs through Gunnison National Forest land and a small section through private property. Small elopements of 10 or fewer people typically don’t require a special event permit on National Forest land.

The FS 317 trailhead off Gothic Road is accessible late May through early October. The Washington Gulch Road section crosses private property that is seasonally closed September through April by the landowner. If you’re planning a fall elopement, use the FS 317 trailhead to avoid any access issues.

It’s one of the most popular trails near Crested Butte, used by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Weekends in peak wildflower season (mid-July through August) can feel busy near the trailhead. The upper meadow sections get quieter the further you go. Weekday mornings are your best bet for something approaching privacy, but you’ll still usually find another couple or a landscape photographer on the trail at this time.

It depends on how far you go and which trailhead you use. Most couples don’t need to go to the summit. The best wildflowers and mountain views are well below the top, reachable within 0.25 to 1 mile of the trailhead.

Yes, on leash. Be aware of mountain bike traffic and keep them controlled around passing horses.

The lower and mid-trail sections are manageable in wedding attire with the right footwear. The trail has some rocky and rooted sections, and the open upper meadow can be muddy after rain. Skip the heels. Good hiking sandals, boots, or flats with grip are the move.

Not for an intimate elopement of 10 or fewer people on National Forest land! If you’re bringing a larger group or need structures, chairs, rugs, or decorations, contact the Gunnison Ranger District at (970) 641-0471 for permission before your date. Rules can and do change, so it’s always good to double check!

Cost & Logistics

Snodgrass Trail is one of the most affordable elopement locations near Crested Butte There is no fee for a small ceremony (under 10 people) on National Forest land.

Groups over 10 are strongly discouraged due to limited parking and space on the trail.

There are also no amenities on the trail. There’s a portable toilet at the FS 317 trailhead, but no running water beyond that. Bring everything you need for the day.

Deep Dive Into Planning Your Snodgrass Mountain Elopement

What the Trail Is Actually Like

Snodgrass Trail is a 2.6-mile point-to-point trail (or a 3.3-mile lollipop loop from FS 317) that undulates through two distinct ecosystems: dense aspen groves and open wildflower meadows, with panoramic views of Mt. Crested Butte, Whetstone Mountain, and the valley below appearing as the trail opens up.

It is crucial to note that since the trails are lined with wildflowers, you MUST stay on established trails to preserve the area. A good photographer can make it look like you’re in the middle of the field without ever leaving the trail!

Choosing Your Ceremony Spot on the Trail

Because this is a trail rather than a designated venue, choosing the right spot matters. Here’s how to think about it:

The upper meadow (1.2–1.6 miles from FS 317 trailhead) The most photogenic and open area of the trail. Wildflowers in every direction, mountain views, maximum sky. Find a section slightly off the main trail path so you’re not blocking the route. Exposed to weather. Afternoon storms move in here fast.

Best for: Wildflower ceremonies, sunrise and sunset elopements, couples who want that full panoramic Crested Butte mountain backdrop.

The aspen grove section (0.8–1.2 miles from FS 317) Dense aspen canopy, dappled light, more intimate feel. Protected from wind and some weather. Less panoramic but incredibly beautiful, especially in fall. One of the best spots for morning ceremonies when soft light comes through the leaves.

Best for: Fall elopements, morning light, intimate ceremonies of just the two of you.

The log bridge and meadow overlook About a mile in from FS 317, a log bridge crosses a small drainage and the trail opens to a view of Mt. Crested Butte. A natural ceremony focal point that many photographers use as a backdrop.

Best for: Couples who want a defined, built-in backdrop without hiking all the way to the upper meadow.

Rules & Regulations for a Snodgrass Trail Elopement

What’s allowed:

  • Small elopement ceremonies of 10 or fewer people without a permit
  • Dogs on leash
  • Horseback riding and mountain biking (multi-use trail, be aware of riders)
  • Hiking and trail running

What’s not allowed:

  • Chairs, decorations, or structures of any kind
  • Motorized vehicles on the trail
  • Camping on the trail corridor
  • Altering the natural landscape. No flower picking, rock stacking, or trail modification
  • The Washington Gulch private property section is closed September through April. Do not use it outside that window

Private property: Part of this trail crosses private land. Stay on the marked trail and respect the landowner’s access rules. The seasonal closure on the Washington Gulch side is real and enforceable.

Multi-use awareness: This is an active mountain bike and horseback riding trail. Give bikers space, control your dogs, and approach horses slowly and calmly. If horses come through during your ceremony, let them pass. And know that horses in the background of your photos might be one of the most magical things that happens all day.

Always verify current regulations with the Gunnison Ranger District at (970) 641-0471.

When To Get Married At Snodgrass Mountain

Best Time of Year To Elope on Snodgrass Trail

Snodgrass Mountain is genuinely beautiful in every season, but is at it’s best in the summer and fall. Here’s what to expect depending on the time of year:

🌡️ Highs in the mid-60s / Lows in the 40s.

✅ Best for: Lupine at the lower elevations peaks in late June and early July, a vivid purple that carpets the hillsides and photographs beautifully. Slightly fewer crowds than peak summer. Some years you’ll still have lingering snow patches on the upper sections as a dramatic contrast to the flower fields below.

⚠️ Watch for: Conditions can still be unpredictable early in the season. Check trail conditions before heading up.

💡 Pro tip: An underrated window. If you want the lupine without the peak-season crowds, late June is your move.

🌡️ Highs in the low-to-mid 70s / Lows in the 40s.

✅ Best for: Peak wildflower window. The meadows on the upper section fill with wildflowers that can grow taller than your knees. Purple lupine, yellow sunflowers, red Indian paintbrush, white columbine, and more color than most people have ever seen in one place. The wildflower density here is exceptional even by Crested Butte standards.

⚠️ Watch for: Afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. Have a plan to be off the exposed upper meadow before they roll in. This is the busiest window on the trail.

💡 Pro tip: Golden hour and blue hour in the upper meadow in mid-July is one of the most photographically extraordinary things near Crested Butte. Plan around it.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-60s / Lows in the 40s.

✅ Best for: Wildflowers starting to fade, crowds thinning, and that late-summer warmth in the light that makes golden hour feel extra golden. A good in-between window if you want to avoid the peak-season trail traffic.

⚠️ Watch for: Less dramatic than either peak window, but often more peaceful than either.

💡 Pro tip: If privacy matters more than wildflowers or fall color, late August is one of the best times to be on this trail to avoid crowds.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-50s / Lows in the 30s.

✅ Best for: The wildflowers are gone but the aspens come in gold. The dense aspen groves on Snodgrass are some of the most beautiful fall color near Crested Butte. Light comes through the leaves and turns everything amber. Fewer people, cooler temps, a quieter and more intimate feel.

⚠️ Watch for: Use the FS 317 trailhead only after September 1. The Washington Gulch private property section is closed. Weather can turn quickly.

💡 Pro tip: Fall on Snodgrass is genuinely different from fall anywhere else near Crested Butte. The aspen canopy on the mid-trail section is something.

Best Time of Day To Elope on Snodgrass Trail

Golden Hour / Sunset

This is what the trail is made for. The open meadows face toward the setting sun, the wildflowers glow, Mt. Crested Butte catches warm alpenglow behind you, and if you’re there on the right evening in July, there may be horses in the valley below. It’s the kind of scene that makes couples cry and photographers do a happy dance. Plan your ceremony for the 90 minutes before sunset.

Morning

Cooler temps, softer light, and far fewer people on the trail. Mountain bikers tend to start later in the morning, so early risers often get quieter windows. The aspen groves and wildflower meadows photograph beautifully in morning light: soft, dappled, and intimate.

Where to Take Wedding Photos Near Snodgrass Trail

Snodgrass Trail itself is stunning, but the area around Crested Butte is genuinely one of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes in all of Colorado. If you’re working with us, we’ll build you a custom timeline that layers adventure portraits into your day. Here are the spots we love most near Snodgrass.

Gothic Road/Gothic Valley

The drive toward Gothic is one of our favorites. Peaks, meadows, the quiet energy of the old research station. Completely different from the open lake feel and a beautiful contrast for a second location. There’s also several great hikes in this area for those feeling a bit more adventurous!

Emerald Lake

About 20 minutes away, Emerald Lake has vivid emerald water, rocky shoreline, mountain reflections. Completely different energy from Snodgrass. Great for couples who want that remote alpine lake look, but does require a high clearance, 4×4 vehicle to get to!

Kebler Pass Road

A 20-minute drive away goes on to become one of the most scenic autumn drives in Colorado, lined with massive aspen groves. In early October, the color is unreal.

Planning Tips

Get Your Marriage License Colorado makes this easy. No waiting period, no residency requirement. Visit any county clerk’s office with your IDs and $30. The closest to Crested Butte is the Gunnison County Clerk & Recorder’s Office, about 30 minutes south. An appointment is required. Colorado allows self-solemnization, so no officiant needed if that’s not your thing.

Know Your Trailhead and Check the Private Property Closure If your elopement is in September or later, use the FS 317 trailhead only. The Washington Gulch side closes September through April due to the private property crossing. Don’t show up at the wrong trailhead on your wedding day.

Plan for Sunrise or Sunset If you’re here in summer, build your ceremony around golden hour. This is one of the best easily accessible trails in Crested Butte and planning around anything else is leaving your best option on the table.

Get Off the Exposed Upper Meadow Before Afternoon Storms July and August thunderstorms in Crested Butte are fast and serious. Know the weather forecast, watch the clouds, and have a clear time you’re heading back to the treeline if things look sketchy.

Plan Attire Thoughtfully The trail has rocky, rooted sections and can be muddy after rain. Flowing dresses photograph beautifully here, and they’re manageable with good flat or low-heeled footwear. Stilettos or anything with no traction won’t work. Build in a trail-to-venue attire swap if you’re doing a ceremony before or after portraits elsewhere.

Be Aware of Mountain Bike Traffic This trail is popular with bikers, especially on weekends. They come downhill fast on the FS 317 descent. Choose your ceremony spot off the main trail line and keep dogs leashed and controlled throughout the day.Expect Horses Fantasy Ranch Outfitters runs scenic trail rides up Snodgrass Trail. If you encounter a group of riders mid-trail, slow down, step to the side, speak calmly, and let them pass. It’s also a genuinely magical thing to have in the background of your photos.

The best part about getting married in Crested Butte is that there’s never a shortage of ways to fill the rest of the trip.

Hiking: Snodgrass Mountain, Judd Falls, Gothic Valley, Lake Irwin, and Emerald Lake all offer something different. There’s genuinely something for every ability level.

Horseback Riding: Fantasy Ranch Outfitters runs guided trail rides up Snodgrass Trail. You can literally ride horses on the same trail where you got married. A completely different way to experience this same landscape!

Mountain Biking: Crested Butte is widely considered one of the mountain biking capitals of Colorado. If you and your partner ride, this is a non-negotiable addition to the weekend.

Wildflower Festival: Held in mid-July, this is one of the most celebrated events in the Gunnison Valley. If your wedding date overlaps, lean into it.

Kebler Pass Drive: One of the great Colorado fall drives. Time it for early October and you’ll have one of the most spectacular backdrops you’ve ever seen.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding: Lake Irwin is down the road and makes for a mellow afternoon. The Gunnison River is about 30 minutes south for something with more current.

Downtown Crested Butte: Walk Elk Avenue. Get coffee at Camp4Coffee. Grab a beer at the Eldo or the Brick. Eat at Secret Stash. Wander into the boutique shops. The town is genuinely charming and the locals are always friendly!

Stargazing: Low light pollution, high altitude, summer skies that stretch forever. Pack a blanket and make a night of it. Or better yet, end your wedding day with astrophotography, one of our specialties!

The trailhead is about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown, which makes a dinner reservation feel well-earned and totally reasonable after a day on the trail.

Secret Stash Pizza in the most beloved and quirky space on Elk Avenue. If you and your crew are ready to celebrate loudly, this is it.

Sunflower Farm-to-table, multi-course, slower-paced. Great for couples who want the day to end somewhere beautiful and intentional.

The Dogwood Craft cocktails in a restored 1891 miner’s cabin. A perfect first-drink-as-married-people spot.

Snodgrass Trail is a heavily trafficked multi-use trail on National Forest land and private property. Love this place by treating it carefully.

  • Stay on the established trail. Don’t create shortcuts or social trails through the wildflower meadows.
  • No flower picking: every flower left standing is part of the ecosystem.
  • Pack out everything you pack in.
  • Keep dogs leashed and under control around other trail users and horses.
  • No rock stacking or trail modification of any kind.
  • Respect the private property crossing. Stay on the marked trail and honor the seasonal closure.
  • Give mountain bikers and horses appropriate space and right of way.

Following Leave No Trace principles helps keep this place beautiful for everyone!
