Peanut Lake in Crested Butte is a reservable outdoor ceremony site managed by the Crested Butte Land Trust, offering open, grassy meadows with a serene lake in the foreground and sweeping 360-degree views of Mt. Crested Butte, Gothic Mountain, and the surrounding Elk Mountains. It’s walkable from downtown, one of the most accessible ceremony sites in the area for guests with mobility considerations, and genuinely beautiful from the moment you step out of your car.

No. Peanut Lake contains mining waste at the bottom and is unsafe for swimming or fishing.

Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash. Do not allow dogs to swim in the lake.

Deep Dive Into Planning Your Peanut Lake Wedding

The Wedding Ceremony Site at Peanut Lake

The Peanut Lake ceremony area is an open, grassy site just off Peanut Lake Road, with the lake itself in the foreground and unobstructed mountain views in every direction. It’s flat, wide-open, and completely different from the intimate aspen grove feel of the Woods Walk. Think: big sky, big mountain backdrop, the kind of openness that makes your vows feel genuinely expansive.

You can set up chairs and temporary decor within the Land Trust guidelines. This means no tents, no structures, no alterations to the natural landscape. Plan your full setup and teardown within the 3-hour window.

Transportation FYI: The Land Trust requires a shuttle plan submitted with your reservation as parking spaces are limited. Standard parking is at the first pullout on Peanut Lake Road. Wheelchair-accessible parking is 1.2 miles further up the road. For larger groups, walking, biking, or a private shuttle from downtown works well. Downtown is less than a mile away and the walk is flat and easy.

When To Get Married at Peanut Lake

Best Time of Year To Get Married at Peanut Lake

Reservations are only open mid-June through early October, so the season is defined. Here’s what each window looks like:

🌡️ Highs in the low-to-mid 70s / Lows in the 40s.

✅ Best for: Peak wildflower season mid-July through August, when the surrounding meadows and hillsides fill with color. The lake is calm and reflective in the morning, the grasses are lush, and the mountains look impossibly green. Long daylight hours give you real flexibility.

⚠️ Watch for: Afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. No tents are permitted on site, so have a rain plan ready. This is the most popular booking window and fills fast, especially on weekends!

💡 Pro tip: An early morning ceremony when the lake still and reflective is one of the most beautiful things you can experience at this site.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-50s / Lows in the 30s.

✅ Best for: The lake takes on a different mood in fall. Grasses go golden, hillsides shift, and there’s a quietness to the open space that summer doesn’t quite have. Fewer visitors on the adjacent trail, cooler temps, warm fall light.

⚠️ Watch for: Weather can turn fast and early snow is possible by late September. Have a weather plan.

💡 Pro tip: Book early if fall is the vision. Once couples discover this window, it goes fast.

🌡️ Highs in the mid-50s to low 60s / Lows in the 30s.

✅ Best for: The lake is newly melted, the hills are still a vivid green, and wildflowers are just starting to come in. Some years you get lingering snow on the peaks as a backdrop. Fewer crowds and a softer, quieter energy.

⚠️ Watch for: Unpredictable weather and some years a muddy approach depending on spring runoff.

💡 Pro tip: An underrated window. The soft green and early wildflowers have a delicate quality that peak summer doesn’t.

Best Time of Day To Get Married at Peanut Lake

Morning / Sunrise

The lake is often completely still in the morning, and when it’s calm, the reflection of Mt. Crested Butte and Gothic Mountain in the water is one of the more spectacular things you’ll see in Colorado. Fewer people on the Lower Loop Trail means more privacy. Soft, clean light that photographs beautifully.

Golden Hour / Late Afternoon

The mountains catch warm light from the west and the whole valley comes alive. This is the more popular window and the one we recommend. The trade-off is more foot traffic on the adjacent trail. Just plan for the occasional biker rolling past and lean into the fact that you’re sharing this beautiful place.

Where to Take Wedding Photos Near Peanut Lake

The ceremony site is gorgeous, but the area around Crested Butte gives you so much more. Build in time for an adventure session and your day will feel complete.

Peanut Lake Itself

When the water is calm, the mountain reflections are stunning. Don’t skip the lake edge for portraits before or after. It’s one of the most distinctive photo opportunities at this site!

Snodgrass Mountain

A short hike from the trailhead near Mt. Crested Butte takes you into open wildflower meadows above town. Mid-summer it looks like someone spilled a paint box across the hillside. One of the most classic Crested Butte photo experiences.

Gothic Road

The drive toward Gothic is one of our favorites. Peaks, meadows, the quiet energy of the old research station… completely different from the open lake feel and a beautiful contrast for a second location. There’s also several great hikes in this area for those feeling a bit more adventurous!

Kebler Pass Road

A short drive from Peanut Lake, this road goes on to become one of the most scenic autumn drives in Colorado, lined with massive aspen groves. In early October, the color is unreal.

Emerald Lake

About 40 minutes from Peanut Lake, a short trail leads to a brilliant teal alpine lake ringed by mountains. Completely different aesthetic than Peanut Lake. More dramatic, more remote feeling. An excellent pairing with the gentle openness of Peanut Lake if you want variety in your photos, but a 4WD vehicle with high clearance is absolutely required.

Planning Tips

Get Your Marriage License
Colorado makes this easy. No waiting period, no residency requirement. Visit any county clerk’s office in Colroado with your IDs and $35 within 35 days of your ceremony. Colorado allows self-solemnization, so you don’t even need an officiant if you don’t want one. How to Self-Solemnize in Colorado →

Book Early, Especially for Fall The early October window at this site is something special (golden grasses, mountain views, beautiful light) and it books fast once couples figure that out. If fall is the vision, don’t sit on it.

Be Honest With Your Guests About the Trail The Lower Loop is a multi-use trail and Peanut Lake is a beloved local spot near the trailhead. Hikers and bikers will pass nearby during your ceremony. This isn’t a secluded private venue, it’s a conserved open space. Most couples find it charming. Brief your guests so no one is caught off guard.

Plan Your Shuttle Logistics Early The parking pullout holds a limited number of cars. For groups of 10 or more, a shuttle from downtown is smart and easy. Downtown is less than a mile away on flat terrain.

No Tents Means a Weather Plan Is Essential There’s no backup coverage at the site. In the event of afternoon storms (very common in July and August), know in advance where everyone is going. Have a venue in town on standby if needed.

Hire an Officiant Who Can Project No amplification is allowed, and Peanut Lake is an open site with ambient wind and trail noise. For larger groups, an officiant who knows how to command a ceremony without a microphone makes a real difference.

Know The No-Reception Rule
The Land Trust is clear: no receptions on property. Your ceremony ends, everyone picks up, and you head somewhere else to celebrate. Crested Butte has great reception options nearby to keep the party going!

Arrive Early
Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before guests to set up within your 3-hour window.

Prepare for High Altitude
At 8,900 feet, you might feel slightly off if you’re coming from sea level. Drink more water than you think you need, take it slow, and give yourself time to adjust.

Pack Smart
☀️ Sunscreen – The sun is intense at elevation
🦟 Bug spray – Can be needed depending on season
🧥 Layers – Temperature can drop 10-15°F after sunset
💧 Water – Stay hydrated at altitude
🗑️ Trash bag – Pack out everything you bring in

Respect Wildlife
You might see elk, deer, or other animals. Keep your distance, don’t feed them, and let them do their thing.

Peanut Lake is less than a mile from Elk Avenue, which means your reception options are genuinely great. Here’s what we’d actually send couples to:

Bonez Elk Avenue’s iconic Mexican restaurant. Great energy, full buyout options for 44–150 guests, food that works for a party. Loud and celebratory in the best way.

Breadery The upstairs Creekside Event Room seats up to 36. Private, intimate, excellent food. If your group is small and dinner matters, this is the call.

Scarp Ridge Lodge Boutique luxury in the heart of town. Full buyout for up to 18 overnight guests and 50 for a seated dinner. Polished, private, and genuinely special.

Sunflower Farm-to-table with a reputation for multi-course dinners. A beautiful choice for smaller groups who want something elevated after a meaningful ceremony.

Private Chef/Vacation Rental Book a house in town and bring in a private chef. For groups of 12–30, this often gives you the most flexibility with timing and atmosphere.

The best part about getting married in Crested Butte is that there’s never a shortage of ways to fill the rest of the trip.

Hiking: Snodgrass Mountain, Judd Falls, Gothic Valley, Lake Irwin, and Emerald Lake all offer something different. There’s genuinely something for every ability level.

Mountain Biking: Crested Butte is widely considered one of the mountain biking capitals of Colorado. If you and your partner ride, this is a non-negotiable addition to the weekend.

Wildflower Festival: The annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival takes place in mid-July each year. It’s the busiest time of year in Crested Butte, so expect crowds if your date overlaps. Worth leaning into if you’re here for it.

Kebler Pass Drive: One of the great Colorado fall drives. Time it for early October and you’ll have one of the most spectacular backdrops you’ve ever seen.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding: Peanut Lake is off-limits for water activities, but lakes like Lake Irwin or Emerald Lake make for a great water day!

Downtown Crested Butte: Walk Elk Avenue. Get coffee at Camp4Coffee. Grab a beer at the Eldo or the Brick. Eat at Secret Stash. Wander into the boutique shops. The town is genuinely charming and the locals are always friendly!

Stargazing: Low light pollution, high altitude, summer skies that stretch forever. Pack a blanket and make a night of it. Or better yet, end your wedding day with astrophotography, one of our specialties!

Peanut Lake is a working piece of conserved land that sees hikers, bikers, families, and wildlife every day. Treat it accordingly.

✓ Pack out everything you bring in, including all decor, flowers, and packaging
✓ Stay on established trails and the designated ceremony area
✓ No flower petals, confetti, rice, or non-native materials at the site
✓ Keep dogs on leash and out of the lake
✓ Keep noise reasonable as the trail is shared
✓ No fishing or swimming in Peanut Lake
✓ Leave the site exactly as you found it. Your $500 deposit depends on it, and more importantly, the land depends on it!

Following Leave No Trace principles helps keep this spot beautiful for everyone.
